Bifrost FAQ

What is Bifrost?

Bifrost is a native macOS app to manage and open all your remote connections from one place — a modern terminal, file transfers, remote desktops, and built-in management for containers and virtualization. One organized library of servers instead of a dozen scattered tools.

Which protocols are supported?

  • SSH and SFTP — terminal and file transfer
  • RDP — Windows remote desktop
  • VNC — cross-platform remote desktop
  • Telnet and FTP
  • SSH tunnels (port forwarding)
  • PowerShell / WinRM — remote Windows shell
  • Hyper-V — Windows virtualization
  • Docker and Apple Container
  • Kubernetes

Can I open connections with Siri, Shortcuts or Spotlight?

Yes. Ask Siri or run a Shortcut to open any saved connection hands-free, and build your own automations with the Shortcuts app. You can also let Bifrost index your connections in macOS Spotlight to find and launch them by name from anywhere. Spotlight indexing is opt-in and off by default — turn it on in Settings whenever you want it.

Is Bifrost free? What does it cost?

Bifrost is free to download and starts with a 14-day full trial — everything unlocked. After the trial, you can keep using it for free with up to 5 connections. A one-time Bifrost Pro purchase (not a subscription) unlocks unlimited connections and the advanced features. Check the Mac App Store for the current price.

What does Bifrost Pro unlock?

  • Unlimited connections
  • iCloud sync of your connections, and optionally your passwords and Bifrost-generated SSH keys
  • Container & cluster management — viewing your Docker, Kubernetes and Apple Container resources is free; performing actions on them (start/stop, deploy, exec…) is Pro. Hyper-V is entirely Pro (viewing and actions).

Your purchase is tied to your Apple Account, so it’s available on every Mac you sign in with.

Does Bifrost track me or send my data anywhere?

No. Bifrost has no analytics, no telemetry, no tracking of any kind. Your connections and credentials never leave your Mac — the only network connections Bifrost makes are to the servers you configure yourself (and to Apple, for the App Store purchase). We never see your data.

Where are my passwords and keys stored?

  • Connection details (names, hosts, settings) live in a local database inside Bifrost’s app container on your Mac.
  • Secrets (passwords, key passphrases, generated SSH keys) are stored in the macOS Keychain, never in plain text.
  • You can optionally encrypt the local database with a master password (AES‑256‑GCM) and unlock it with Touch ID.

Is my data in iCloud?

Only if you turn on iCloud Sync (a Pro feature, off by default). When you do, it uses your own private iCloud — and any secrets travel through the iCloud Keychain, which is end-to-end encrypted. Apple can’t read it, and neither can we. You can turn it off at any time.

Can I move my setup to another Mac?

Two ways:

  • iCloud Sync (Pro) — everything stays in step automatically across your Macs.
  • Export / Import — from Settings you can export your connections to a file and import them on another Mac.

What do I need to run Bifrost?

Bifrost requires macOS 15 (Sequoia) or later. It’s distributed through the Mac App Store and runs fully sandboxed for your security.

Is there an iPhone or iPad version?

Not yet — Bifrost is macOS-only for now.
